WCIRB – California’s Experience Rating Formula: New Variable Split Point Experience Rating System

In Workers’ Compensation, the Experience rating system is used to benchmark an individual employer against others in its industry based on a three year look back of an employer’s historical payroll history and claim experience.  This comparison is called an experience modification or X-Mod. Effective January 1, 2017, Insurance Commissioner and the California rating bureau, Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB), have adopted a change to the “split point” which will affect how future X-Mods will be calculated.  In this article, our own Workers' Compensation Practice Leader, Shannon Holt looks at why this formula is changing and the effects that this may have on your experience modification.
