WCIRB – California’s Experience Rating Formula: New Variable Split Point Experience Rating System

In Workers’ Compensation, the Experience rating system is used to benchmark an individual employer against others in its industry based on a three year look back of an employer’s historical payroll history and claim experience. This comparison is called an experience modification or X-Mod. Effective January 1, 2017, Insurance Commissioner and the California rating bureau, Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB), have adopted a change to the “split point” which will affect how future X-Mods will be calculated.
